United in Grief
Three Sacks united, 13 dark strips of pants, three American flags, a pride tulle skirt, recycled clothing from a Goodwill in the South, Walmart plastic grocery bags, an overcrowded population of pony hair beads, labor, velvet, leather, the oil from my hair and skin, 38 felted faces, love, grief.

Ancestor June told us
“it is time to make our way home”
who is home? where?
what does that mean in a time like this?
I know that I carry home within my body- and so do you.
it follows me, follows us.
you can plant a flag anywhere, but
who said that it belongs to you?
that I belong to you.
what is a flag anyway…
whatever we want it to be.
a quilt, a book, a place.
a person, a torso, a breast,
a body.
everybody.
this flag is an offering.
an undoing
unmasking
of what’s unresolved, uncomfortable
tangible, honest.
can we talk about it?
what if it talked about us?
something holds us close.
is it love,
or grief?
